Unprecedented Victory at CBAF Shasta Event

shasta_toys06.jpgIt’s not too unusual to see 39 teams show up at the Packard’s Bay ramp in the pre-dawn darkness for a winter fishing event. It’s not even too much of a stretch to see big names of competitors like Gutierrez, Harper, Davis and Tuck ready to flex their know-how on a world class spotted bass fishery like Shasta Lake. But it’s not what happened at the weigh-in that made the 2nd event of the 2007 CBAF season special… it’s what happened before the tournament ever began.

At the Friday night check-in at Phil’s Propeller in Redding, it was clear the Toys for Troops theme had stirred the hearts of anglers and spectators alike. Most team arrived with multiple toys but the real surprise was the car loads of gifts dropped off by folks that weren’t even fishing in the event. By the time the speedy, no-hassle check-in and launch was completed the next morning, more than 250 toys had been donated to children of troops whose parent(s) have been lost while serving in Iraq. While not verified, rumor had it that more than one angler held back a tearful eye while another beautiful rendition of our national anthem was delivered by CBAF staffer Mike Baker just prior to launch.

shasta_fish06.jpgOh, there was also some fishing accomplished that day. Departing in single file, boats headed for their early morning water despite the rain and wind which had persisted through the night. As they returned at days end it was clear the much anticipated reaction strike wouldn’t produce the winning stringer. Good numbers were reported on spinner baits in cuts, but the bigger fish would come slow. James and Jason Fookes took the win with 10.71 pounds and a check for $780. The pair stayed with jigs which produced a little bigger fish on average. Team Lyon and Farley took 2nd place with 10.11 pounds good for $440 with team Karlowski and Cronic in third place with 10.04 pounds. In all 8 teams went home with a check but all 39 left with a great sense of accomplishment, compassion and pride.

At the awards ceremony anglers were treated to another great dinner featuring soup, salad and all the fixings as is customary at CBAF events. Those new to the CBAF trail were amazed at how professional the staff was and how well things were run before, during and after the event. Most also commented on how great it was to see folks enjoying more than just another competition, but also fellowship with one another.

Thanks to all who participated in this event. We at CBAF are proud to support the men and women who sacrifice themselves so that we can enjoy the freedoms we do… like competitive bass fishing. We plan to continue to combine our love for the sport with our love for people as we push forward into another exciting tournament season. Keep an eye out for our Kid’s Camp scheduled for spring of 2007. Hopefully we’ll see you soon at one the most competitive, professional, family friendly tournament circuits on the West Coast.
